Acadian Art and Identity: Évangéline, Claude Roussel, and Paul Édouard Bourque

2017 •

Anik Marchand

This thesis examines the birth of modern Acadian art in Southern New Brunswick in the late 1960s. It focuses on two artists, Claude Roussel and Paul Edouard Bourque, who attended and taught at l’Universite de Moncton during the 1960s and whose painting had a profound impact on the articulation of Acadian identity in the province as that referring to a predominantly francophone, Catholic minority community in the east coast of Canada, whose descendants were the original French settlers in the region; and who, over the centuries, also include members with mixed Indigenous and European heritage. In 1755, Acadians were expelled—first from Grand Pre, Nova Scotia and then the rest of the Maritime Provinces (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island)—by the British Loyalists who arrived in North America in 1604, in what came to be called the Great Deportation, or Le Grand Derangement. Acadians would not return to the region until the mid to late 1760s. The 1960s was an important...

"Milton in Canada: Ideal, Ghost or Inspiration?"

2015 •

Martin Kuester

In this paper, I have a look at the construction of Milton’s role as a representative of Britain from mostly Canadian colonial and postcolonial perspectives, seeing him as prophet, scapegoat, model or nemesis. While for Dabydeen “Milton's ornate, highly structured, Latinate expressions, so unattractive to modern tastes influenced by Eliot and Yeats, are still the exemplars of English civilization against which the barbaric, broken utterance of black people are judged,” views of Milton in Canadian texts from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries offer quite a spread of judgments ranging from admiration to disgust. I have a look at positive as well as negative constructions of “Milton” in Canadian literature ranging Henry Alline to Margaret Atwood. Journal issue online (see link).

Bound by Print The Baptist Borderlands of Maine and the Canadian

2022 •

Brittany Goetting

Asynchronous communication was essential for the development of the cross-border and global identities of Baptists in Maine and the Canadian Maritimes between 1770 and 1840. Religious print, especially published association meeting notes and periodicals, extended the reach of itinerant preaching and molded a cross-border community in the Northeast Borderlands between 1790 and 1810. It allowed Baptists to discuss theology, share news about local churches, and expand their community. American Baptists formed international institutions focused on the spread of Protestantism after the War of 1812, and Maine Baptists actively engaged this more global community through financial donations to the new institutions and by engaging with their periodicals as readers and contributors. Maritime Baptists in the post-war period did not pivot to this expansive community as quickly due to economic and political constraints, and their efforts prioritized local churches and domestic missionary efforts into the mid-1820s, after which they participated more actively in the international benevolent movement. Both Maine and Maritime Baptists published their own periodicals by the 1820s. Baptists in both parts of the Northeastern Borderlands had joined the broader Protestant reform movement by the late 1820s, but in doing so the former close ties between Maine Baptists and those in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia were no longer as vital. Print played a critical role in the transition from cross-border to global identity by offering a medium for discussion. Baptist culture was not hom*ogenous and growing commitments to foreign missions were challenged by some. Print provided a space to debate values and to reshape Maine and Maritime Baptist identities. A study of asynchronous religious print culture is especially important to understand how laypeople engaged this process. Print particularly enriched women’s expression as an influential tool to engage fellow Baptists throughout the Northeastern Borderlands and beyond. Religious print culture was a vital form of social networking that shaped community formation. It helped build cross-border and global religious identities and connected isolated individuals to a larger Baptist community. Then, as now, asynchronous communication has a powerful impact on individuals’ sense of self and place in the world.

HDP HIST Blacks and Acadians

Henri Paratte

How can you comnpare two minorities in the same Canadian province(s), when one is racialized on the basis of its skin color and the other one on the basis of its language? How can the question of political districts in Nova Scotia for the Black and Acadian minorities be similar enough to be considered a similar political probklem when it comes to reallocating them targeted electoral districts? Going back to the early colony of Acadie, this essay explores the similarities and dissimilarities, the strains and the alliances between the Afro-Nova Scotian community and the Franco-Acadian one. It is to ,my knowledge the first time this attempt at a broad comparison has been done.
