How many times can I take the ACT? ›

ACT Inc., which administers the exam, lets you take the test up to 12 times, though it's best to take it no more than 2-3 times. Beyond that, you're unlikely to boost your scores substantially. What's more, multiple retakes might reflect negatively on your college application.

It seems obvious, but many students forget. A bag should absolutely be brought to the SAT and ACT! This can be a backpack, a purse, or a Ziploc bag. This will allow you to keep your snacks and personal items under your desk during the tests.

The ACT has a total of 215 questions with 1 optional essay. The English section has 75 questions, the math section has 60 questions and the reading and science sections both have 40 questions.

Consider trying to test at a center in another state, territory, or province. If you cannot locate a test center within 75 miles of your home or within reasonable traveling distance, you may need to request Arranged Testing.

Food or Drinks

You will be given a break to grab a drink at the fountain or have a snack you have stashed in your locker or car, but food and drink are not allowed in the testing area.

For most of the ACT, there is no “best” letter to guess. Except… at the end of the Math section — then there is a best letter to guess on the ACT. Is ACT harder than SAT? ›

The SAT and ACT generally cover the same topics. Both ACT and SAT scores are used for college admissions decisions and awarding merit-based scholarships. Most colleges do not prefer one test over the other. Neither the SAT nor the ACT is harder than the other.

The science section requirement is being removed from the ACT, and the test will be shorter to be more flexible and manageable for students.

A school will not require SAT or ACT scores if it is test-optional. But they will still review and consider them as part of your application. It does not mean that SAT and ACT scores are no reviewed at all. Only schools that are "test blind" do not look at standardized test scores at all.

There is no limit to how many times students can take the ACT test. On average it takes students 2-3 times to achieve their testing goals.

If you do worse, you can simply submit the higher score from a previous test. Some colleges (e.g., The Ivy League) require you to submit all of your ACT scores to assess your academic growth. In this case, too many retakes may impact you negatively, especially if your scores don't improve.

Colleges generally do have access to information about how many times you have taken the SAT or ACT. When you register for these standardized tests, you typically provide your high school code, and the testing organizations share your score reports with your high school.

Technically speaking, you can't fail the ACT exam. Scores fall from 1 to 36, with no minimum passing threshold. Even the lowest possible score won't stop your college applications in their tracks. The beauty of the ACT is that you can retake it as often as you want to better your scores.
